12/30/2017 0 Comments christmas with the craziesI love Christmas. But it has gone to a whole new level with kids. I love the sentimentality, all the cheesy Christmas activities, the cozy snuggly feelings and the pure excitement and joy my kids have with Christmas. I don't love the days without normal routines or naps, the constant demand for presents and the every day philosophical battles over the legitimacy of Santa and his elves. Gah.
I've also heard "Jingle Bells Batman Smells'' on repeat. And nearly every time someone freaks out because they are/are not the one doing ballet. But Jackson had his first school Christmas concert this year! (Pretty sure the first words out of my mouth were "oh man, 12 more years of this?!) It was a lot of fun watching him sing 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' in French with very reluctant actions and a grand finale of a nose pick. It was also awesome being woken up every morning for a week before Christmas with some little kid bad breath breathing into my face at 5 am, "is it Christmas today?!". Or getting out of bed at 6 to discover two of my crazies had polished off almost an entire bag of jumbo marshmallows I had stupidly left out. But I did love waking up to JAckson having turned on every Christmas light he could because ''it was just all so cozy". And having homemade Christmas decorations everywhere that both kids proudly displayed to everyone. Or having Shiloh tell me all she wanted for Christmas was to be a mommy. I'll be honest, mixed emotions on that one. We chose to create our own advent calendar this year with a variety of Christmas activities (like baking cookies or making Christmas cards)

In our house third time is an insane wild child. Harper makes my other two look like a walk in the park. She's stubborn and sassy but ridiculously brave and determined. She makes Shiloh look mild most days which is quite the accomplishment! We never had to move our toilet paper before. Now we are lucky if Harper doesn't devour half a roll by lunch time. Our other two played with the toilet water if we weren't fast enough. Harper climbs into the toilet. The other two would try to ''hide'' from us - on the middle of the floor, under their blankets, etc. Harper climbs into the back of the corner cupboard and sits perfectly silent until I'm ready to lose my mind thinking someone kidnapped her. She doesn't talk a whole lot but oh boy does she growl. She literally growls at you when she wants something, you ask her to do something, etc. Oh she can babble and say a few rods but chooses to growl. Her brother plays with her like she's another toy - rough housing, hiding, covering, jumping, pushing, pulling. And she loves it. She boldly walks on our ice rink, slipping and sliding but just as determined as the other two to 'skate. We have a little snow hill in our backyard. Harper doesn't even flinch. We have a decent sized yellow slide which she climbs up by herself and whips down into a pile of snow. Fearless. And at the same time she is adorably hilarious, with 4.5 teeth and a huge gummy smile. She closes her eyes in a totally dorky smile and loves to be chased around the house. She could face snuggle with you all day and kicks her legs contentedly when she is snuggling. Okay, so maybe third time is a charm. 12/4/2017 0 Comments christmas time! It's Christmas time!
My husband helped me puke Christmas all over our house - tree (obviously one that we cut ourselves), two garlands with lights, one homemade garland with snowflakes, little Christmas trees all over, giant snowflakes, table decorations and of course Christmas lights outside everywhere. Okay so we get a little into the season.. But it's so wonderful! We also made an advent calendar for the kids with a different activity each day to attempt to teach my kids to focus on more than just presents. It's not working. We don't teach the kids that Santa is real. I'm fine if they 'participate' in a few cultural Santa things (writing him a letter, mostly because it means they get one in return, seeing him at the mall, etc) but we are clear he is not real and is not the reason we celebrate Christmas. We read the Christmas story often and try to talk about our nativity scene every day. Buuuuut it's not working. "The angel is telling everyone in the stable that Santa is coming with their presents!" Any time it snows or someone talks about snow it's an immediate "It's Christmastime now!! Time for presents!!" "Why do we celebrate Christmas guys?" "Because of presents!" "Umm no. Whose birthday is it at Christmas?" "Santa." "No. Who was born in the stable? Who lives in our hearts." "Jesus" *and whispers "Santa". "There is nothing I love more than getting presents." "I love Harper and I love shopping for her! But I think she would love all the things I picked out and would want me to have them." And it's only December 4.... On a hilarious note, the Christmas radio station we sometimes listen to is from Buffalo, New York. I don't know why it comes in clearer than a local station but it does. Anyways, Shiloh doesn't realize that it's Buffalo the place and not the animal so she thinks all the songs are coming from real buffalos or the radio announcer is talking to buffalos. Which she finds hilarious which I find hilarious enough to not correct her :) |
